Define
teleconferencing
How do you define teleconferencing? Essentially, it is a long distance meeting that
takes place between three or more people. However, there are also several types of teleconferences to
consider as well. The most prominent are audio teleconferences and
video teleconferences.
Audio teleconferences are typically made over a multiple line phone, though
sometimes microphones or even cell phones are used as well.
Many companies use audio teleconferences for long distance interviews, progress
reports, planning sessions, performance reviews, and other tasks.
These types of teleconferences are quite affordable and are used by businesses,
schools, libraries, and other organizations all over the world.
Video teleconferences involve the use of computer screens or televisions to allow
speakers to see one another during the meeting.
Many define teleconferencing of this nature as a web based
meeting, though it’s perfectly capable to establish a connection via television cables as well.
Video teleconferences are different from audio teleconferences in that they are
commonly used for mass communication events, such as press releases, training seminars, lectures, speeches, and
more.
They are considerably more expensive than audio conferences and require the
use of cameras, speakers, codecs, remote controls, and more. It’s not unheard of for big corporations to use video
conferences for long distance meetings as well.
However, not many would define teleconferencing as the ideal way to interact with
clients, customers, or employees. For audio conferences, it’s easy to create conflict and confusion due to not
being able to see the other speakers’ faces. Video teleconferencing does not solve this issue, as it is still
difficult to maintain eye contact and construe facial expression even while on camera.
Despite these disadvantages, many establishments define teleconferencing as the most
convenient way to communicate directly with long distance colleagues. This is largely because they are able to save
money on travel arrangements. Teleconferencing is also incredibly convenient in that you can set up a meeting
quickly and easily without worrying about reserving a room.
Additionally, many define teleconferencing as a useful way to enhance learning
facilities. Not only does it allow students to attend classes from home, but it also allows them to learn from
teachers, lecturers, and experts from all over the world who may not have had the time or the funding to visit
their school.
Now that you know a little more about the types of teleconferencing and their many
uses, you can determine for yourself if you would define teleconferencing as an essential part of your business
activities.
